Clever Octopus was founded by Heather Horner and Casey Gibson—two women with forty-plus years combined experience in leadership development, executive coaching, and talent strategy across tech, healthcare, finance, and global organizations. Both of us were displaced from senior corporate roles in our fifties. Both of us did the panic-applying before we figured out what actually came next.
Heather spent over twenty years building Talent functions, designing leadership programs, and coaching leaders across finance and STEM organizations. Casey spent two decades as an L&D leader, master facilitator, and executive coach. When we lost the roles we expected to hold for years, we both made the same mistake: we tried to fix it fast and get back to being someone with a title. What we found on the other side was work we'd always wanted—one-on-one, no corporate noise, real people making real changes.
We named the company after the octopus because they're a masterclass in decentralized brilliance. Nine brains. An uncanny ability to squeeze out of restrictive structures. And when annoyed by unwanted company, they don't circle back or schedule alignment meetings—they gather up nearby rocks and hurl them at the offender. If you've spent years camouflaging yourself to survive an environment that wasn't built for you, the parallel is obvious. Welcome to your next chapter.
